The Probe Media Foundation, Inc. (PMFI), in cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Radio Mindanao Network (RMN) will hold a youth workshop on “Youth Radio Dramas for Peace” on August 21 to 22, 2008. The 2-day workshop provides opportunities for young Cebuanos of established organizations to increase their awareness and understanding on issues of peace and understanding, specifically on Muslim and Christian religion and culture in order to produce creative radio dramas on the subject.

BACKGROUND
Probe Media Foundation runs the Kabataan News Network (KNN) project, which is a nationwide network of young media practitioners from all over the Philippines who produce reports on issues that concern them. Staying true to its tagline, “Gawa ng Kabataan, Para sa Kabataan!” KNN invites young Cebuanos to create radio dramas focused on the issue of understanding and peace. Media plays a crucial role in fostering understanding and peace. Though it been criticized as highlighting the violent image of Muslims and their conflict with Christians, it also has the responsibility to also tell the countless stories of peace, respect, diversity of ethnic groups and triumphs of the Muslim people. Radio is one of the most effective means of communication because it reaches a large and diverse audience.

Radio drama series targeted towards the youth on Muslim and Christian issues has the potential to change stereotypes and misconceptions to bring about understanding. It would be able to creatively allow the audience to become aware of the effects of discrimination and to realize that both Christianity and Islam are religions of peace – in an entertaining manner.

Youth Radio Dramas for Peace
The workshop is a 2-day live-out event composed of activities such as lectures, discussions, sharing and radio storytelling techniques. By the end of two-days, the participants would have produced short radio dramas on the issues. They will also help professional radio drama producers of Radio Mindanao Network plan a 50-episode radio drama to be aired in October to November.

The workshop invites Cebuano youth aged 15-20 years old to apply. They must be a part of an organization or club. Prior training in radio is not required.

Meals, workshop materials and training shall be provided by the organizers. Participants must be able to shoulder their own transportation to and from the venue in Cebu City on August 21 and 22, 2008. Accepted participants shall be notified by August 8, 2008.

Deadline of Submission of Applications is 28 July 2008.
