INVITATION TO UP MANILA’S “ALAMAT” SONG LAUNCH
The Department of Arts & Communication (College of Arts Sciences, UP Manila) invites everyone to attend the “Alamat” Concert that is being organized by the “Alamat” Working Committee and the Humanistic Studies 20 class on “Mito at Alamat sa Pilipinas” on February 28, 2008, from 6:00 to 7:30 in the evening, at the Little Theater, College of Arts & Sciences (Rizal Hall, UP Manila, Padre Street, Manila). This is in preparation for the upcoming centennial event – ALAMAT : International Conference on Myths and Symbols to be held on November 25-27, 2008, which has the theme, “Flood Stories, Lost Lands and Drowned Continents.”
The concert launches the original Filipino composition “Alamat” which serves as the theme song of the upcoming International Conference on Myths & Symbols. The song calls on Filipinos and citizens of the world to realize the myth of the divine “hero” (Mutyang Bayani) in everyone, by working together in loving, protecting, saving and healing the world, its environment and resources. It also calls for people to manifest in actual reality the long-held mythical belief in the spiritual destiny of the nation by studying and understanding the myth of “the Pearl of the Orient Seas” in connection with the legends of a “Lost Paradise”, “Hidden Paradise”, or “Lost Islands/ Continents” common and predominant in the South Asian, East Asian, Southeast Asian and the Pacific regions - which recall similar local folk account of stories on “Mu”, “Lemuria,” “Shang-ri-la, ” etc. The song also embodies the hope among people of averting the impending tragedy of a global deluge caused by global warming or climate change,
is what happened in the mythical “drowning” of lands, islands, and continents in prehistoric times due to inter-glacial melting of the ice-caps. The song says that through the concerted efforts of awakened “heroes” the threats of the tragedy could be averted or alleviated.
The “Alamat” song is recorded on CD by the moving tenor voice of Dr. Ramon Acoymo (Dean of the College of Music, UP Diliman) and composed by Prof. Augusto Espino (also of the UP College of Music), from the poem written for the conference by painter-acupuncturi st Ramon Devora. The concert features Acoymo and Espino as singer and musician, respectively.
